Since The Necks composed ‘The Boys’ as part of a film score, I would like students to create a one minute improvisation for a written scenario or for a film scene that does not contain any music.
In this activity, students should break into groups and collectively agree on a mood to evoke (through their improvisation) within their chosen scenario or film scene. Once students have decided a mood I would strongly encourage students to look beyond playing their instruments in a conventional fashion. Instead, I would like students to think about expressive techniques and extra-musical sounds that could be utilised as central ideas for their improvisations. For example:
- Pick scraping on guitar
- Using effects pedals to modify vocal, guitar, keyboard and drum sounds.
