Aural Activity (The Necks – The Boys)

Students will be asked to graphically notate ‘The Boys’. The students should include both graphic representation and formal notation in their scores. Since the piece repeats a lot, students will be able to choose a 2 minute portion of the score.

Musical concepts and ideas to think about in your score:

  • How will you represent dynamics, texture, pitch, duration (metre/rhythm) and tone colour in your score?

A variety of scores by composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Gyorgy Ligeti and John Zorn will be referenced in order to inspire students in writing their scores.
