Aural Activity (Beethoven – Symphony No. 5)

Students will learn about motifs, phrases and melody in relation to Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No. 5’. First, we will analyse the tune ‘Happy Birthday’, looking to define what a motif, phrase and melody is in this context. This is a good piece to use, as it is simple, memorable and enable students to hear clearly the ideas of motif, phrase and melody.

After analysing ‘Happy Birthday’, we can begin deconstructing ‘Symphony No. 5’. For instance, listening to the way Beethoven ends the first movement (loud, short and separated notes).
