Performance Activity (Fela Kuti – Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense)

A lot of Fela Kuti’s music comprises of extended improvised solos. Since many afrobeat pieces utilise pentatonic scales, students will break into groups and practice improvising using a pentatonic scale.

A few common afrobeat riffs will be notated, the groups will pick a riff and each person will have a turn at improvising while the rest of the group play the riff. Once comfortable, students will be asked to think about syncopated phrases (this is something I would demonstrate and model to the class before asking students to play).
